Smart home misadventures: Eufy Smart Lock (Wi-Fi) Part 2

Hello there, It has been quite a while since the last time I posted (too long, as a matter of fact), but never mind that, I’m back for another post this week. Since I technically failed my challenge already, I supposed the consistency of posts released as we advanced would depend on my laziness.

As you can infer from the title, this post continues the previous post about my smart lock. More specifically, I will discuss the process of installing the smart lock in my home. Let’s get started, shall we?

The installing process

Right, so before anything else, there are tools we will need for this installation.

  • Philips head screwdriver
  • Drill (maybe)
  • Hammer (Maybe)
  • Common sense or at least the ability to read and follow instructions.

Step 1: Installing the lock deadbolt

As you might have guessed, the smart lock utilized the base and motorized the deadbolt to lock/unlock the door. All the steps are already labeled when you unbox, so you just have to follow them.

Pretty straightforward, this box included the new deadbolt and 2 screws. If you have a brand new door, then great. You just have to install this one if you are like most people and already have an existing deadbolt. Then we need to remove the old one before installing the new one.
This is what is inside the box for step 1.
To remove the old deadbolt, first, remove 2 screws that hold the panel to the door. A Philip head screwdriver should do the job.
Once we removed the panel, there is another plate on the side of the door that holds the deadbolt. 2 screws later, the old deadbolt should come off.
Tada, just like magic 😉
Well, you guessed it! It’s time to install the new deadbolt to the door (hopefully, it fits). If you are unlucky and the space is too small to fit the new one, then you should know what to do and use the drill to make the room ðŸĪŠâ€Ķwith moderation. You wouldn’t want to break your door, do you?
I managed to use my power of “persuasion,” and the deadbolt fit perfectly on the first try -😎 â€Ķ not. The power of the drill makes everything fit 😈.
Two screws later, and this looks like new. Just like it was installed by Profreshional Aka me 😁. And no, I did not spell professional wrong, in case you are wondering.

Step 2: Installing the strike plate

Step 2 box contains most of the hardware required for this step, including the 2 choices of strike plate and screws as shown in the picture. Whichever works for your situation.
Removing the old strike plate., just 2 old screws holding it in place, so it shouldn’t be that hard to use a little “persuasion” ðŸĪŠ
I decided to go with the plate that looked similar to the old one
There we go, don’t mind the few cracks and shaved-off area. I was just using some “persuasion” technique to ensure the strike plate properly fit in. Of course, it does involve using a little force and hammer but never mind that. We got what we wanted.

Step 3: Installing the front panel

This step is straightforward. Just install the lock front panel into the slot. It’s hard to miss.
Make sure you inserted the panel rod correctly through the middle hole of the locking mechanism. Also, the electrical wire needs to be routed through as well.

Steps 4: Installing the back plate

The back plate helps secure the front panel and the battery power, and you just need to line up to the front panel and feed the wire through the hole. Which hole, you ask? Well, if it isn’t apparent, then I can’t help you with that, of course, the biggest one, what else?
Including the screws to help secure the back plate to the front panel.
The back plate was installed.

Step 5: Installing the back panel.

As you might have guessed, this is step 5, removing the top cover to show the screw-mounted hole and battery compartment.
There are connectors on the back, and they are going one way, so you will know if you have installed them correctly. Also, make sure the key is appropriately connected too.
Using the provided screws to secure the back panel
The back panel was installed.
I am installing the battery in the battery compartment. You should hear a notification saying the lock is powering on. Follow the prompt.

Well, that is pretty much all for physical installation. The next step is to set up the lock using the Eufy App.

That is all for this post. The next part will be the process of setting up the smart lock on the App. Until next time (however long it might be). Take care.
